For several decades, this corner has gained a local reputation as a hazardous and perilous set of intersections.
Before this week, everybody in the area had their own story about a close call or accident here.
Now we all have the same tragic story.
We need to fix this intersection now, before another life is taken.
Part of the reason the intersection is so badly engineered is because it falls under the jurisdiction of three different counties, who each take only partial responsibility for the design and maintenance. Any changes would have to pass three local councils before implementation.
The main issue is that the section of Punkeydoodles ave between Rd 101 and Rd 5 is constructed like a highway off-ramp, but leads motorists directly into a small neighbourhood at highway speed. Additionally, there is the lack of visibility on many of the back-roads behind the curve. Together, this creates a very dangerous situation.
These issues were only made worse when Oxford Rd 5 was paved just over a decade ago. Overnight, it became a shortcut for commuters to avoid traffic when traveling to Woodstock or the 401, dramatically increasing traffic through Punkeydoodles.
Together, these are a recipe for tragedy. It's absolutely critical that the intersection is redesigned and its safety improved.
To make the intersections safe, we need to make the following changes:
Regardless of which changes are made, we need to apply pressure on all townships to step in and take necessary action.
Punkeydoodles Corners are dangerous, but they don't have to be.
